Calculating steel pipe weight is essential for logistics planning, structural design, and procurement cost estimation. Whether you are working with ERW, seamless, or spiral welded pipe, the calculation follows the same geometric principle with slight adjustments for manufacturing tolerances.
For all round steel pipes, weight per meter is calculated as:
``` W = (OD - WT) × WT × 0.02466 ```
Where:
The constant 0.02466 assumes standard carbon steel density of 7.85 g/cm³. For stainless steel (approximately 7.93–8.00 g/cm³), multiply the result by 1.01–1.02.
Calculate the weight of DN150 (168.3 mm OD) ERW pipe with 7.11 mm wall thickness (Schedule 40):
``` W = (168.3 - 7.11) × 7.11 × 0.02466 W = 161.19 × 7.11 × 0.02466 W = 28.25 kg/m ```
A 6-meter length therefore weighs 28.25 × 6 = 169.5 kg. A bundle of 37 pipes of this size weighs approximately 6,270 kg—important to know when specifying truck or container capacity.
Seamless pipes have a wall thickness tolerance of ±12.5% per ASTM A106 and API 5L. This means a theoretical weight of 28.25 kg/m could range from 24.7 kg/m to 31.8 kg/m at the mill—nearly a 29% spread. When ordering tons rather than meters, always confirm whether pricing is on theoretical weight or actual weighed weight. Most mills invoice on theoretical weight; fabricators buying by actual weight can save 5–10% on tolerance gains.
Spiral (helical) welded pipe uses the same formula but with attention to weld reinforcement. The external and internal weld beads add approximately 0.5–1.5% to the calculated weight depending on diameter and wall thickness. For large-diameter pipe (above 600 mm OD), this can add 50–150 kg to a 12-meter joint. If you're specifying for a 20 km pipeline, the difference between calculated and actual weight could mean an extra 20–60 tons of steel.
For pipe specified in inches:
``` W (lb/ft) = (OD_in - WT_in) × WT_in × 10.69 ```
To convert: 1 kg/m = 0.67197 lb/ft.
Example: 6-5/8 inch (168.3 mm) × 0.280 inch (7.11 mm) wall ``` W = (6.625 - 0.280) × 0.280 × 10.69 W = 6.345 × 0.280 × 10.69 W = 18.99 lb/ft ```
Checking: 28.25 kg/m × 0.67197 = 18.99 lb/ft. ✓
